This is a magnificent ruined ancient city situated some 25 km east of the city of Masvingo. It is the largest stone structure ever built south of the Sahara. It had in the past seen the succession of different kings and rulers in a period dating back to the 15th century. The monument consist of the hill complex which was the head quarters ,where the kings resided and the spiritual quarters . The great enclosure is situated just a stone throw away from the Hill complex and it housed mainly the valuable products such as grains and trading goods
Early history show that the Great Zimbabwe was a successful trading post, which involved early Portuguese and Arab traders who traded in gold , copper, ivory ,glass and cloth. This trading capital grew to give birth to the name of the country, Zimbabwe, derived from two Shona words, dzimba dzemabwe, which translates to the houses of stones
Today it is a historical tourist attraction which can be visited anytime of the year. The lake Mutirikwe just close by is also a hive of activities to water based activities such as sunset cruses and fishing. It is a gateway to Gonarenzou and a break when travelling between Matotos hills and the Eastern highlands.
