Walk and camp in the wilderness of Zimbabwe’s third-largest national park. Chizarira National Park is an isolated piece of scenic paradise on the Zambezi Escarpment, the landscape dominated by steep gorges and rivers that drain the northern parts of Zimbabwe into the mighty Zambezi river. The name of the park comes from the local Tonga language, chijalila, which translates to a great barrier referring to difficult terrain. The isolated location gives perfect conditions for the fauna and flora conservation with little traffic exerting enormous pressure and away from human and nature conflicts. Chizarira NP and Gonarezhou NP are both wilderness parks in the truest sense of the word, where you can camp in undeveloped, unfenced sites right in among the wildlife. Camping is the only option if you are looking for accommodation.
This remote and rugged national park is situated in the northwest of the country, just south of Lake Kariba, and the most scenically beautiful and dramatic park of all. Chizarira NP features high on the list for enthusiastic birdwatchers. This is not yet a park with heavy concentration of game but there are good populations of leopard, lion and hyena. Chizarira NP is a destination for hikers and walkers and others who want to experience one of southern Africa’s rapidly dwindling, truly wild and rugged places. Walking safari is the activity number 1 here in Chizarira NP.
