The Big Five, as it is affectionately known, is a collection of animal species that are difficult in hunting. These five large mammal species where known to be dangerous and it was considered a feat by trophy hunters to bring them home. Today the Big Five makes up the best sightings on safari. The Big Five is made up of the African bush elephant, also known as the African giant. Known for its massive size and its quick reaction once alerted to danger, the elephant is really a marvel to watch.
The cape buffalo is well known for its never die or never give up spirit when being attacked. Working together as a team to rescue their members under attack gives the buffalo a perfect seat in the Big Five parliament.
The lion is the most feared animal in the African savannah. Equipped with strength of unmeasurable proportion, the lion is known to bring down animals double their size and their roar sends cold shivers to any listener there by commanding the name THE KING OF THE JUNGLE.
The black rhino comes in with its bulk of bad tempers and its poor eye sight which is complemented by its aggression. Known to attack even safari vehicles on their worst days, the rhino is always unpredictable.
The elusive leopard makes up the final animal in the parliament by its hiding technics where by it blends with the shadows of many African tree tops. It is just a challenge on its own to spot a leopard before even attempting to get closer to it. Once cornered, the leopard would find its way out past through an unsuspecting spectator leaving them with peeled out skin as they sneak buzz their way out.
All these African giants are found in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia where we as Twende operate. Some national parks have all the Five while others miss one or two. To see all of them in one safari is everyone’s dream which depends also on your luck and your good spotting skills.
